Luminescence Written in 2009, Luminescence for 5 voices and electronics was inspired by work of Dutch video maker Roos Theuws.

The use of light in her work was inspiring to me. The disturbed perception of time is achieved in her works by the use of various rhythmical patterns of light and shade. I was inspired to express this with musical means. Vocal techniques that I used in the piece are detached from the tradition of classical singing; instead, pulsating hoquetus of rhythmical patterns develops the tempo and textures of the piece. The base notes in electronics give support and space to the singers middle range and complements them with very high frequencies at the end. The harmony is achieved not by chordal, but by rhythmical texture, giving the singers quite a challenging task.

The composition was commissioned by Dutch Performing Arts Found. It was premiered during Gaudeamus Music Week festival 2009 by Vocaal Lab.
