Receding sands in place of time - Breath
Written for Biennale di Venezia festival
premier: September 4th, 2004
Biennale di Venezia
Sometimes one breath is enough. A breath is essential in life. One thought is like a breath of the mind. In music, the breath is the instrumental musical phrasing. It is meant to resemble what a person would do or say in one breath. In kind, the piece begins, slowly introducing the heart of the music as it beats and forms its first phrases.
The breathing develops. More interesting structures form while the breaths keep pushing the piece forward, but each inhalation is different. Paraphrasing the Greek philosopher, you cannot listen twice to the same note. The same note will not be exhaled twice for the audience.
A breath is only a little activity, that which provides oxygen for life. Inhaling is taking; the universe is giving us everything we really need and then removing us from it.
The end of one breath is the beginning of a new one. Continuity is the motor of life.
