European Contemporary Orchesrta stems from three highly distinctive contemporary ensembles :Telemaque (Marseille/France,Raoul Lay), orkest de ereprijs (Apeldoorn/The Netherlands,Wim Boerman) and Musiques Nouvelles (Mons/Belgium,Jean-Paul Dessy) have joined forces to form this cross-border, European orchestra. Entirely devoted to performing contemporary music, ECO offers a new point of departure for compositions that combine a symphonic approach with new technologies, voice and electronic instruments, for works that also exploit the strengths and flexibility of an ensemble.
ECO is endeavouring to bring new music to the attention of a broader public and is establishing new benchmarks for innovation and research (i.e. in instrumentation and musicology) as well as for activities in the field of professional and educational training in European countries.
18 commissioned works by 18 composers, 3 concerts for large forms (try-outs) and 4 concerts focusing on small forms : ECO invents a new way of conceiving European instrumental creation music and develops social and cultural initiatives around each event.
September 2011 - March 2012 - Via Dolorosa, Project of Compagnie Bischoff
Via Dolorosa is a liturgy for the concert staged around Via Crucis - visionary music that Liszt wrote in his last year of life. The work is far removed from traditional church music and is performed by twelve singers and pianist Ronald Brautigam. The fourteen Stations of the Cross are visually supported by photographs of Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer. Kasia Glowicka composed an epilogue to the text of Michelangelos La notte gripping quatrain, the same motto of Liszts compositions. Jan Van den Bossche, artistic director of Compagnie Bischoff is conducting.
